Understanding Sober Living

Sober living is structured, peer-based housing for adults in recovery from alcohol or drug addiction. Unlike detox or inpatient treatment, a sober living home is not a clinical program — it's a bridge between intensive treatment and independent life.

Residents live together in a shared home, follow house rules designed around maintaining sobriety, and support each other's recovery. Most residents work or attend outpatient programs during the day. The accountability and community structure are the core value — they're what makes early recovery stick.

AfterHouse Recovery is a structured sober living home in Des Moines, Iowa. We offer:

  • Furnished rooms at the all-inclusive resident rate of $550/month
  • All utilities and Wi-Fi included
  • Weekly house meetings and peer community
  • 24/7 on-call staff availability
  • Accountability structure with random drug and alcohol testing
  • Des Moines location close to employment, meetings, and services

We are a small, structured home — not a large facility. That's intentional. Recovery happens in relationships, and smaller communities build them faster.

AfterHouse is a good fit for adults 18+ who are committed to sobriety and ready for structured, semi-independent living. Specifically:

  • People stepping down from inpatient or residential treatment
  • People who need accountability and community to stay sober
  • People rebuilding employment, stability, or relationships after active addiction

We are not a detox facility. We cannot accept residents who are actively using or require medical supervision for withdrawal. If you're not sure whether you're ready for sober living, call us — we'd rather have that conversation upfront.

House Rules & Daily Life

The core rules are straightforward:

  • Zero tolerance for alcohol or drugs (including marijuana, regardless of prescription or Iowa law)
  • Random drug and alcohol testing — refusal counts as a positive
  • Curfew: 10 PM Sun–Thu, 11 PM Fri–Sat
  • 3+ recovery meetings per week (AA, NA, or approved equivalent)
  • Active pursuit of employment or education within 30 days of move-in
  • Assigned house chores, rotated weekly
  • Respect for all residents and staff at all times

Violations can result in a warning, probationary status, or immediate discharge depending on severity. The full rules — including zero-tolerance items — are on the House Rules page.

Routine is one of the most effective relapse-prevention tools in early recovery. A typical day at AfterHouse looks like this:

  • Morning: Wake up, complete morning chores, leave for work, job searching, or outpatient programming
  • Daytime (8 AM–5 PM): Productive time outside the home — work, education, treatment, or job search
  • Evening: Recovery meetings, dinner, house chores, personal time
  • Weekly: Mandatory house meeting, meeting attendance documentation submitted
  • Curfew: 10 PM Sun–Thu, 11 PM Fri–Sat

The structure is intentional, not punitive. Early recovery benefits from predictability — when you know what each day looks like, there's less room for the thinking that leads to relapse.
