Move-In FAQ

Quick answers to what most people ask before arriving. More questions? Contact us directly.

Yes, with restrictions. Visitors are welcome during daytime hours and must be cleared by your house manager. No overnight guests. Visitors are not permitted in your private room โ€” shared common areas only. All guests must be sober; residents are responsible for their guests' behavior on property.

Yes. Parking is available at the house. Having a vehicle can actually help with employment and AA/NA attendance. However, driving privileges can be restricted as part of the accountability process if house rules are violated โ€” it's one of the tools we use in the progressive model.

Yes. Phones are permitted and you keep your personal device. There are no "phone lockboxes" or scheduled phone time. What we do ask: phones are put away during house meetings and check-ins, and we hold each other accountable around late-night use that disrupts sleep. Reasonable expectations, not surveillance.

Prescribed medications are allowed and must be in the original labeled prescription bottle. Medications are documented at intake. MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment) including Suboxone and Vivitrol is supported โ€” we are not abstinence-only from evidence-based medical treatment. Bring your prescription bottles and your prescribing physician's contact information.

No pets at this time. We know that's a hard one for some people โ€” it's something we're actively considering for future locations. For now, no animals of any kind at any AfterHouse location.

Not just allowed โ€” encouraged. Employment is one of the pillars of stable recovery. We can assist with job placement if you arrive without work lined up. The only requirement: work doesn't exempt you from house meetings, weekly check-ins, and the 10pm curfew. If your shift runs late occasionally, talk to your house manager โ€” we work with people, not against them.

Call us before you arrive at 515-518-9417. We understand that people coming out of treatment or incarceration often arrive with limited resources. We can sometimes work with individuals on a case-by-case basis and connect you with emergency rental assistance resources in Des Moines. Don't assume the answer is no โ€” ask.
